For those visiting Yeovil’s Quedam Shopping Centre in recent weeks would have probably seen the latest slice of colourful artwork to be installed in the town .

Polish artist Grażyna Wikierska has transformed a piano, which has been placed in the shopping centre, into a vibrant addition to the area, which also links perfectly with Yeovil Art Space’s current series of exhibitions and events under the banner of The Sound of Yeovil.

Grażyna has told Somerset’s Alive! about the inspiration behind the design and the creative process that was undertaken to bring the piano to life.

Speaking about the commission, Grażyna said: “Zoe Li, project director at Yeovil Art Space, invited me to paint the piano. I am a member of Yeovil Creatives and she knows my work and philosophical approach to the art and life.”

The artist soon knew where she would turn for inspiration and peace and nature were at the core of the idea.

Grażyna continued: “Inspiration for this project came deeply from my spiritual core. I was inspired by native Iindians who live in peace with ‘Mother Earth’, which gave birth to all life including us.

“The face in this painting is a representation of Pachamama, Mother Earth. I wanted to depict that we are co-creating with Her. That we are responsible in this process of receiving and giving our love.”

Grażyna added: “The small figure is a representation of all of us. Everyone of us is an artist and magician. We create our lives, ourselves, uplifting experiences for humanity to connect to life, light and spirit.

“We are part of the Earth and the Earth is part of us. The Earth is a living being and just as it nourishes us we nourish the Earth by our presence, thoughts and good intentions for the planet.”

Grażyna said that there was another inspiration for the creative process and it was a quote from an acclaimed Japanese artist.

She continued: “Also I was inspired by a quote by Yayoi Kusama, ‘your soul is composed of the same dots as the Universe’.

“We are built from the same cosmic components as our Mother Earth which I wanted to depict as a caring feminine power.”

With such a colourful addition to the town centre, what were Grażyna’s hopes for the finished piece?

The Polish artist said: “I hope that this painting will bring joy and brighten up passers by, that will speak to their subconscious and notice that there is another realm to this life – build from energy. That it will spread positivity and vibrations of love that we all are.”

Yeovil and South Somerset is currently a vibrant area for creatives and Grażyna believes that there is plenty to be excited about and inspired by,

She said: “I am very happy that there are so many different artistic events and projects happening in Yeovil and the surrounding area, which engage artists and art recipients.

“Art is a kind of dialogue between souls where we don’t necessarily need to verbalise our emotions, but express them to feel them. It is the most important language that enriches our lives.”

What next for Grażyna? There seems to be plenty in her creative mind that she wants to unlock and bring to life.

She told Somerset’s Alive!: “Projects are now to focus on painting and create a new series of paintings, which are very close to me and getting closer lately.

“It is about spirituality which is important for all of us who are waking up to who they are. I want to immerse myself in the process of painting to feel joy and have fun.

“Feel the present moment and be at zero point where anything is possible.”
